Almost every week, a patient sits in my chair and tells me they have been putting off a dental implant for two, five, sometimes ten years. They have lived with a gap, a wobbly bridge, or a denture that clicks during meetings — because the word 'surgery' terrifies them.
I understand it. The word implant sounds bigger than the procedure actually is. So let me describe what really happens, from the chair.
A modern implant placement at Dental Brasstacks begins with a CBCT scan. We see your jaw in 3D — bone, nerves, sinuses — before we touch anything. From that scan, we 3D-print a surgical guide. The implant goes exactly where the software planned it. No guesswork, no large incisions, no surprises.
On the day of surgery, you are awake but completely numb. The local anaesthesia is delivered with a computer-controlled, painless injection system — most patients don't even feel the needle. The implant placement itself takes 20 to 45 minutes for a single tooth. You feel pressure, never pain.
Within an hour of walking out, the numbness wears off. Most patients take one mild painkiller that evening, eat soft food, and go to work the next day. The recovery is genuinely milder than a wisdom-tooth extraction.
Where does the fear come from, then? Usually from someone else's bad story — a relative who had an old, freehand placement 15 years ago, or a YouTube video of a complicated full-mouth case. Modern guided implantology bears almost no resemblance to that.
If you are nervous, we have a programme for exactly this. It is called CALM — a structured pre-surgery anxiety protocol where we walk you through the entire procedure on a 3D simulation, answer every question, and let you meet the team before treatment day. You leave the consultation knowing exactly what will happen, in what order, and how each step will feel.
The patients who use CALM almost always say the same thing afterwards: 'That was nothing like what I had imagined for ten years.'
If a missing tooth has been on your mind, come for a Rescue Assessment. We will show you the scan, talk you through the options honestly — including doing nothing — and never pressure you to book. Many patients leave that first visit not booked for surgery, but finally informed enough to decide.
